The type of carpet cleaning you use on your carpets depends a lot on the type of carpets you have and on the amount of soiling that has built up.

Hot water extraction is very popular and probably accounts for the largest percentage of carpets cleaners in the UK. Some people still call this steam cleaning, but this is not an accurate description of the process.
The modern way of hot water extraction carpet cleaning is to spray a pre spray onto the carpet and extract with warm water. It is more complicated than this of course, but that is the basis of it.
Essentially, the machine has two tanks. One for fresh clean water and one for the waste water. It has a pump which squirts out the contents of the hot water tank and vac motors suck it back up and deposit it into at the waste tank.
The operator goes through with an industrial vacuum cleaner first to loosen up all the soil and extract it. After this he will select a pre spray and apply that. there is a dwelling time for the spray with the detergent to work. Then the carpet cleaner will come along with the machine and extract the soil and dirt from the carpet.

in private homes. In commercial premises’ they may use a rotary machine to agitate or rub in the pre spray and then it is transferred to the micro fiber pad.
It can then be extracted by the hot water machine and discarded. There are other methods, but these seem to be the main ones. The rotary is a heavy duty machine that rotates a big 17 inch cloth pad on the carpet. This rubs the detergent in and produces a better job.
